Preventing Store Break-Ins

Unfortunately, there has been a spike in break-ins on sneaker resell stores recently, so we are writing a guide on the best way to go about preventing store break-ins. There are ways to make your store much more protected that are very low-cost!

Let’s start with the basics first.

  • Install cameras. Cameras are the largest deterrent of burglars, so installing a camera system is a great place to start with security for your storefront. If a full security system is too much of an investment, buy fake cameras and hang them up so they look real!
  • Change the items in your window display. This is tricky because the goal of a window display is to make your store look good to potential customers, but switching a pair of Travis Scott’s for Pandas may not be a bad idea. One of the most common break-ins is smashing the front window, taking the window display, and running.
  • Install a security system. While it doesn’t directly prevent break-ins, this limits the amount of time robbers will be at your store. A loud alarm and a call to the cops makes the robber leave significantly faster.

Those are some basic measures that for preventing break-ins and robberies at your storefront. If you have already taken these actions, here are a few more creative ideas:

  • Contact the police department. Storeowners often call the non-emergency police phone number with security risks. Ask for more patrol coverage, especially at night, around your store. Police want to eliminate crime like store break-ins just as much as you do, and most will put extra effort in if employees or owners are concerned.
  • Reinforce window glass. If your store is undergoing renovations, consider adding new, strong windows to the list. These will eliminate most un-solicited entry into your building.
  • Increase insurance. Nobody wants to pay more for insurance, but in the event that your store does get broken into, the amount of money returned will be significantly higher. There are also sneaker-specific insurance companies.

One key factor in the event of your store getting broken into is knowing inventory. If your business does not have a reliable grasp on what it had in the first place, insurance companies will be much more hesitant to return losses. Having a clear, concise measure of where all items are is essential for damages to be accounted for.
